Why the mainstream media keep getting it wrong about Corbyn and Labour

The media politics experts have got it wrong again. For days they’ve been telling us that Farage was only going to place candidates to challenge Labour. Farage actually sets off a hand grenade under the Tories campaign. They got this call on Farage wrong for the same reasons they got Corbyn leading Labour, Brexit happening and Clinton losing and Labour’s performance in 2017 so wrong. They can’t see beyond their own bubble anymore.

Contrary to their own delusions, the mainstream media are not outsiders who speak “truth to power”. They are insiders. They are part of that well paid, metropolitan elite that benefits exceptionally from the way things are. The most prominent ones, eg the political editors and big presenters, are wealthy by anyone’s standards, own expensive homes, have private healthcare and can give their kids a privileged education. They themselves are part of that power elite that need ‘truth spoken to it’.

The media elite, consciously or unconsciously, like most people are worried about their own status and incomes. They warm to the people who will protect and enhance that. The people who challenge the status quo, ie their status quo, are threats. Threats to be defeated. ones for them’, ie their side winning. This blinds them to challengers. They dismiss them eg “they can never win” and have an arrogance that only sees their side winning. It’s why they’ve been consistently wrong about Corbyn. He is the biggest to challenge the elite (ie to them) in years. They can’t see him winning because him winning means they’ve lost.

Hence they always look at any political story through that lens, how their side wins and the challenger to it loses. It’s why in this case, when they think about Farage’s plan, they immediately think it must mean bad news for Labour and see the scenarios that lead to those outcomes. They blindside themselves to how it might be bad news for the other side, the Tories in this case. Their best thinking and energy goes into the negative Labour scenarios. Also in their bubble they’re cut off from what the real world thinks.

That explains why they came up with the “Corbyn will never become Labour leader”, “he has no support and will go during the coup”, “Labour will get destroyed in the 2017 election” etc. They are totally blind to other narratives or outcomes.It’s also why they’ve got political forecasts so wrong, eg Clinton losing, Brexit winning the EU Referendum, the collapse of Miliband’s Labour in Scotland etc. They have just become blind to alternative scenarios.

How will this affect the current General Election? Expect more mistakes like their wrong call over Farage. They will view and spin pretty much any development as part of a ‘bad for Labour, bad for Corbyn’ scenario. Anything that counters narrative will be dismissed as an aberration or as ‘fake news’. They won’t believe what their eyes and ears are telling them, eg how many of them called out the car crash start to the Tories campaign? They haven’t because they just can’t see it!

Bottom line, see the mainstream media for what it is, the mouthpiece and voice of the establishment. See that their reporting and forecasts are from that perspective. Also look for what they’re dismissing or not reporting, the truth may not be too far away from there.
