How to see saved WiFi passwords in Mi Phones

This simple hack that I came up with was because I had removed Ubuntu 16.04 and installed Ubuntu 18.04. So of course my PC didn’t have those saved passwords from before. But the thing is my cellphone connects automatically to this network and hence the challenge was to figure out this password without getting into the mess of going root.

There is a feature in Xiaomi phones called Tap to Share Password , with which you can share a network to which you are connected with other people.

So this is how it works.

When I tap on it, it gives me a QR code which contains the SSID and the password. So, what I thought was to use the Scanner App on my phone and scan the QR code (basically the screenshot of the QR code). But lo! I got this.

Due to some reason (I am not too sure if this a feature of Mi phones only), the password is hidden (asterisked). So the only thing left to do is use some other scanning tool. Now there are thousands available in the form of online tools or linux commands and so on…. So, just choose one and scan it. Here, I have shown the output of one command line utility.

There you go. A small hack, but a hack nonetheless.
