Skipping Stones on A Heart Beat

they were the lightning that
accompanied the storms raging a war in
my eyes
they remind me to always better myself
with every slap on my raw wrists
and assure me that tomorrow
will be better because of the
opportunities
I missed.
together we build backbones out of
keyboard keys because every nerve
has a different character, a different
tick.
when they hold my hand, it types
a paragraph.
they hold me together with their al
dente
arms never before warmed to a point
where
a hug was the correct multiple choice
bubble,
I have done that.
they can read me like a novel in the
action of hugging me seventeen years of
paragraphs
have irrevocably spilled into their starry
eyes, my favorite feature.
and I take them with me through the
sanctity
of caffeinated beverages or lack there
of- tea.
the hours I have spent on their couch
coddled
in a blanket made with love, I cannot
explain
how safe it feels.
with every step they take away from me,
I give all of my breath, possibly even my
lungs, to them.
They could live a thousand years and it
would
never be enough to align all the stars
chimerically implanted in my eyes,
almost as if
they create the constellations.
my wrists will always be raw, the
downpour in my eyes will forever be a
raging force in me
but they will always be the words and
the paragraphs
that I will shout at the top of my lungs
when all seems
to fail, tumble, and fall around me, like Pompeii.
they will always help me build my
backbone, even when the keys
don’t clack anymore.
