Social Media and Mental Health

The age of technology and social media has become a phenomenon that has advanced society into a digital state where people are communicating more and more over a device than face to face. It is because of this that mental health issues have skyrocketed all over the world especially in younger people.

My name is Nancy Gutierrez and I attend San Francisco State University where I am majoring in theatre arts. I decided to do research on social media and mental health in teens and adolescents because I myself have suffered from mental health issues and I would like to become more educated on the subject. The question I will be aiming to answer with my research is: What is the relationship between social media and an increase in anxiety and depression in teenagers and adolescents?

With my blog posts I want to spread awareness to people about the effects that social media can have on the developing brain. Mental health is something that I believe should be talked about way more. It is an issue that most of the population suffers from or has suffered from, and for this reason I think it is important to be informed on reasons and causes behind it. Research I have already done on the topic suggests that teens are spending most of their time isolated and on their smartphones where they will take part in social media which leads to feelings of loneliness and oftentimes leads to depression. Research has also shown that the majority of anxiety and depression cases in young adults are of girls rather than boys. A reason for this is that girls are more likely to suffer from low self esteem and body image issues due to social media. As a girl who has suffered with body image issues my whole life, this is an issue that is extremely important to me. With my research and blog posts I not only aim to inform the public about it, but I also want to inspire young people, no matter the gender, to realize that sometimes it is okay and absolutely healthy to not engage in or take breaks from social media in order to retain a peaceful state of mind and to practice self love in order to avoid mental health issues.
