The Treatment of Obama is Why The Left Reduces Everything to Race

It seemed hard to explain. He began his national political career with a speech about unity. He made friends in the senate with Republicans, some of whom even served in his administration. His signature legislative accomplishment was enacting a conservative think tank’s recipe for healthcare reform, more or less exactly what his 2012 opponent did when he was governor of Massachusetts.

Indeed, compared with his early boosters in 2008, Obama was a very moderate president. There is no doubt that some of his treatment was about race, but it probably had as much to do with his political party. Bill Clinton was impeached after reforming welfare and putting the country on a path out of debt, things that supposedly animated Republicans for decades.

If you interpret every political impulse to be tough on crime as a dog whistle for racism, then what do people who want to be tough on crime do? Why, they either just say, “fuck it, I guess I am a racist,” or hold their nose and vote for the racist. (Clinton also had a gigantic crime bill that was popular among the left and blacks in the mid-90s, but was used against his wife 20 years later.)

Also, it’s very odd for a movement that believes that gender is a spectrum to believe that racial attitudes are binary. Many people probably have varying levels of racial beliefs and prejudices throughout their lives and are probably more sensitive to them at other times.

Many people voted for Trump not because they are foaming at the mouth racists, but because they are told their racism is at a 10 when it might be at a 2. No one who earned a ‘B’ wants an ‘F.’ They also did so because the far left tolerates hateful talk against white people (witness the whole Jeong affair at NYT) while white people can’t seem to do anything right: silence is violence, ignorance of other cultures is bad but my culture isn’t your costume. A whole new rulebook has come out and been revised dozens of times before people, even people of good faith, can catch up.

The left needs more toleration of good faith. Anyone who goes to the length of marching with tiki torches is indeed beyond the pale. But that neighbor you never suspected who voted for Trump? We can get them back.
