Greater Miami Jewish Federation Contributes to Bahamas Relief Efforts

One major philanthropic effort of the nonprofit has centered on proving relief to Bahamian victims of Hurricane Dorian. The early September, category-five storm was the strongest to hit the islands since records have been kept, with the hurricane reaching a peak wind velocity of 185mph in the northern Abaco Islands, where roofs were ripped off of houses and cars overturned.

With Great Abaco “virtually uninhabitable” after 3 days of intense pummeling and flooding, drinking water and power were cut off and militia dispersed to prevent looting. Rescue efforts were launched by helicopters and private planes, as well as cruise liners that regularly visit the tourist destination.

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation has made a difference through the distribution of $220,000 donated by approximately 1,000 community members to organizations such as Chabad of Bahamas, IsraAID, Cadena, and the Afya Foundation. A particular focus of the federation funds is in creating a half dozen child-friendly spaces that provide care for the 10,000 children evacuated to Nassau, who are currently living without guardians. In addition, contributions have enabled the deployment of search-and-rescue teams, as well as potable water and medical supply kits for those living with diabetes.
