The Power Of Being Alone

Growing up as the youngest girl child in a North Indian family I was never alone. So even when I moved away from my family at the age of 17 I always surrounded myself with friends. It took me 25 years to REALIZE I dint know how to be alone. Being alone made me either get bored or sad or angry. The result- I would either run for parties, friends or phone calls. Or worse, I would emotional drain my ex boyfriend and blame him for shit.

In today’s world many of us don’t know how to be alone. We face fear, stress or boredom when we are alone. I was a perfectly happy person until I moved to a new city away from my friends and family. So, I had to spend a lot of time alone. Even though I had all the money, a beautiful house and lovely pets I was full of anxiety, fear and depression. I was lost in my mind and I desperately wanted to be better. This is when I realized nothing outside could help me and I needed a deeper relationship with my inner self.

Our society doesn’t teach us how to enjoy being alone. Being alone is looked down upon. If you are having a meal alone people feel pity for you leave alone spending your life alone. But real personal/spiritual development can not happen until we learn to be alone. Being alone is wonderful and our society needs to remember and learn this.

To get out of fear and anxiety I started to travel again. I spent a lot of time on personal development. Learning to be alone requires understanding and loving yourself. I am an extrovert, I get a lot of thrill and energy from the outside world. But in this period of my life I realised I harness a lot of pure and stable energy from inside. Spending time with yourself helps to gain control over our reactions, perspective and true desires.

Learning to enjoy being alone changed my life completely. I am currently settled in Vietnam away from my home country, living by myself and I love every inch of my life.

Being alone makes you the captain of your ship and the master of your soul.

Don’t get me wrong I am not denying the importance of loved ones. I completely believe the quality of one’s life is determined the quality of the relationships. But once you love being alone, it improves the quality of your relationships.

Being alone also helps with exploring and enhancing true creativity.

It requires effort to be comfortable being alone but it increases the overall quality of ones life. There are a number of ways to learn being comfortable with being alone.

Some of the ways to learn to enjoy your company are-

Take charge of your life — Make a resolve be the driver of your life before you go any further.

Meditation- Mediation increases self awareness. Self awareness makes us comfortable with who we are. Meditation also helps us control our fears and anxiety which we might face when we are alone.

Self Love — Self love is the recipe for all the problems in the world. Being alone requires loving oneself. Once you love yourself you project that love on to others and your life. You can Heal Your Life by Louis Hay is a great book for inculcating self love.

Journaling — Journaling helps to understand what is going on with your inner self. It helps to bring clarity of thought.

Spiritual Development — Being alone requires, understanding life and your beliefs. Spiritual development helps to build a stable foundation for life.

Take out time and do fun things alone — You will start appreciating your company once you do this.

Be Creative — Being creative is a great way to spend time with yourself.

Hobbies & Interests — You can channel your energy in developing hobbies and interests when you are alone.

Books — Reading good books can introduces new ideas and show great hope for life.

There is a universe inside us. Once we get hold of it, the outside realigns itself for us.

We have a lot of power in us. We can realise this power only when we become truly happy being alone with ourselves. Happy learning to be alone!
