Does happiness matter?

Study after study suggests happy people have stronger immune systems and live longer. They also tend to be more successful at work and in their relationships. Are some people just born happier than others? Twin studies have found that people inherit a predisposition for happiness, like for depression. While situational events can moderate our happiness levels (e.g., getting married, losing a loved one to illness, etc.) people seem to have a baseline of happiness, which we return to pretty quickly.

Want to be happier?

Leaving culture aside, if you value happiness and want to increase it, you can do so by shifting away from trying to change personal weaknesses and relying on instant gratification and reliance on easy pleasures to leveraging your signature strengths and virtues: wisdom & knowledge (creativity & curiosity) courage (bravery & persistence) humanity (love & kindness) justice (citizenship & fairness) temperance (forgiveness & modesty) and transcendence (appreciation of beauty & excellence)
