I Lived for Five Months On A Cruise Ship

The Story of Ukrainian Refugee

We boarded cruise ship “Ambition” in the Port of Glasgow on October 13th, 2022. At that time, almost 1200 Ukrainian refugees, fleeing the war, were using the ship as a temporary shelter.

New chapter of my life has begun

We came to Scotland without any preparations, I knew nothing about this country. Honestly speaking, it was for the first time in my life going abroad without any plan and any idea where we are going to live next months. It was like to trust your inner feelings, trust your destiny despite the total obscurity ahead.

After landing at the airport we departed for the Refugee Hub and soon afterwards we came to Glasgow, where “Ambition” cruise ship was standing at the pier. Scottish government rented cruise ship specially for Ukrainian refugees.

I never lived in the student campus while studying at the university. And now I got an opportunity to live with 1200 Ukrainians under one roof. It even sounded unrealistic for me.

I always dreamed of travelling on a cruise ship, but I would never imagined such a situation! We were eating together, spending our free time together, celebrating holidays and supporting each other. We were all in the same situation: far from home, feeling anxious and worring about our relatives in Ukraine.

Sometimes they were so loud and noisy, but anyway it was really very good that they had a lot of activities onboard, since they just needed to utilise their physical energy.

If you ask me, if it was hard to live on the ship for so long time, I would say that it wasn’t easy at all. I lived in a small cabin without window (that was probably the hardest part). The air inside the ship was extremely dry, my hear and my skin were dry and dehydrated.
