Why Age Restricted Concerts Should Be A Thing of The Past in Fort Collins

I remember when I was 13 I made a powerpoint to go and see a Slayer concert at Red Rocks. I brought up statistics about people who listen to metal and the correlation to violence, showed examples, and shaped an entire argument why metal isn’t evil. My parents were swayed and I got to experience my first metal concert.

Concerts are a communal gathering dedicated to appreciate human expression. However, today there is still a huge barrier for many kids under the age of 18 to experience such an important milestone. Age restricted concerts have turned many fans away from their favorite artists solely based on their age. Many venues in Fort Collins still uphold this discriminatory rule. Age should not be a factor when relating and appreciating this type of expression.

There is a common argument that certain types of music increase aggressive behavior. This argument has made parents censor their children’s playlist, forbid them to go to Slayer concerts, and force teens to go into the “phase.” However, studies show that aggressive music has no correlation to aggressive behavior. Leah Sharman and Genevieve A. Dingle from the US National Library of Medicine discuss this in their recent study.

This shows that no matter what type of music your children are listening to the only thing that may make them dangerous is you as a parent. Music has constantly been under fire for making perfect kids into moody degenerates. However, parents have more of an impact than any type of media. Dr. Gail Gross writes how important parents are to a child’s development.

When going to a concert it is enriching to see all types of demographics enjoying the music. However, some people are adverse to all ages having this experience

But so can adults, and parents are ultimately responsible for controlling their kids, not the venue. Kids need these types of experiences so they can form their identity. I remember when I went to my first Slayer concert it was empowering to see all types of people headbanging. For the first time I was a part of something bigger than myself.

Zedd an EDM artist is one of the few artists that only perform all ages shows within his genre. In a tweet he gave his reasoning behind this.

People who are above the age of 16 tend to have an air of elitism when it comes to their concert experience. With all the complaining it is plain to see that certain people don’t want everyone to enjoy the music.

Music is important when it comes to building an identity. I know that without concerts I would not be the person that I am today. Concerts played an important role in developing my social skills, connecting with strangers, and realizing the importance of self-expression. So why should we deprive anyone of that?
