Will Abolishing Roe v. Wade Be a Victory?

Conservatives seem to think so

The other day a Christian conservative friend on Facebook asked us all to pray for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Not long ago, a former pastor celebrated the announcement of his grandchild on social media with a mini-sermon and not-so-subtle shaming of those who had chosen abortion.

I had a friend, without evidence and born of conservative propaganda, claim that “Most people use abortion as birth control,” and “They got caught and the easy way out was to abort the child.”

The above reveals the depth of privilege, ignorance, and lack of compassion that the conservative white Christian seems to exhibit on this issue.

But, I wondered, “Was overturning Roe v. Wade going to achieve their goal of fewer or no abortions?”

No, it does not.

What Roe did was prevent needless deaths of women seeking abortions under unsafe conditions. The passing of Roe v. Wade did not suddenly generate abortions nor will removing access to safe abortion clinics obliterate it. Far from it. All it will do is prevent safe abortions — as before.
