The Beginning

Fiction

A thrilling night

It was a late night of January the third. The street lights cast gloomy shadows in her office. She was lost in her thought. Jim, her coworker, has been a handful for a while. She was excited at the idea of getting rid of him as she was sharpening her tool. She thought of Abraham Lincoln’s quote, saying, “If I had five minutes to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first three sharpening my ax.” She would need a reliable instrument for this task, too, she thought as she was examining the blades. The quicker everything would go, the better.

She was nervous. She never did this before. “Well, I s’pose, it comes with the job”, she thought. She replayed the scene in her head, rehearsed every step of the way. She had everything planned out. It would happen on January the fourth at noon, in precisely 13 hours. She didn’t leave any detail to chance. She had her outfit ready. Jim would be there, of course, the location was already determined. She thought of the context. People were in a celebration mood. Christmas and New Year’s Eve were always there to cheer people up. It would only amplify the impact of tomorrow's event. She was exhausted and decided to go home to get the rest she could. She packed her stuff and headed home.

The next day at noon, she was ready and in her killer outfit. She took a deep breath and walked to the set location. Took out her sharp blades, and while everything was going according to plan, she got distracted by the flash of a camera.

She focused on getting all the composure she could and cut the inauguration ribbon of this new library they were opening in Naperville. It was a significant step for her as she just entered the city council of this Chicago-Suburb City. Everyone clapped, including this brown-nosed Jim that she will kick out of the office first thing when she’ll have enough power.

She rejoiced in silence.

The next step was the mayor’s office in a couple of years.
