Senior Year with a Pandemic

I was in the middle of senior year when I first started to hear about the coronavirus. We had just come back from our senior trip at Disney and I had started coaching grammar school kids for a winter…

My time with the Ducky Team

Since completing my art degree I have mostly been in the restaurant industry. Suddenly I found myself in Trondheim, amongst a team of inspiring individuals, finally engaging my creativity and in a workspace that happens to be in one of the colourful, waterside buildings that so many blog posts told me to visit.

My time with the Ducky team was a great experience and an immensely valuable developmental opportunity. It was far from what I’m used to and has made me realise that it is never too late to pursue something that you have a passion for. As a result I’ve realised that rewards are possible if you dare to push yourself out of your comfort zone and are lucky enough to be surrounded by people that can empower and guide you.

One of the most significant things I noticed on my arrival was the energy of the work environment. Perhaps it is because everybody at Ducky is a leader or that Ducky is uniting individuals to do something for the good of our planet and society as a whole. There was an atmosphere rich with enthusiasm, the spirit of collaboration and positive feedback. It was clearly evident that everybody was there because they wanted to be. I’m so thankful for the chance to soak up the spirit of this extraordinary team.

“My time with the Ducky team has given me a real appreciation for the passion and determination required to sustain a start-up, a greater awareness of my own carbon footprint and a realisation that a whole new way of working is possible.”

During my time with Ducky I primarily worked on updating the ‘Ducky Translate API’ which is a project that creates dynamic visualisations of users CO2 savings. I was able to learn and practice using a range of new design tools and workflows alongside observing those around me to develop my skills even further. With limited previous experience of using Adobe Illustrator I am truly grateful for the opportunity to prove myself. There’s no greater day than one filled with drawing, so being able to unleash my creativity towards a clearly defined purpose was extremely rewarding.

I also took away a number of specific design rules while contributing to the re-design of the sales and marketing material that was taking place during my visit . Working with the Ducky design team made me realise the true importance of collaborating with others and the benefits of seeking periodic feedback along the way. It was great to see how it maximises ideas and helps everyone remain on the right path.

I arrived at Ducky hoping to learn a little more about design and came away with so much more than that. I am fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to continue my work on the ‘Ducky Translate API’ and as a result I hope to develop my skills even further and play a small part in helping to build a sustainable future.
