Mount Hard Disk Partition on Debian 10 Xfce Without Password

A simple hack can make password authentication go away every time you want to mount a hard disk drive

Thunar file manager on Debian 10 Xfce asks for root password every single time I want to mount my hard disk drive. This is annoying! I log into my Debian 10 Xfce with my username and password. I do not need additional password protection for mounting my hard disk partition. Maybe it’s required for a highly paranoid person, but not for me. I just want a single click to open a hard disk partition. The rests can go away!

Apparently, I can remove this password authentication for mounting hard drive by editing a single line in org.freedesktop.UDisks2.policy file. Debian 10 Xfce comes with the Mousepad text editor by default. So I’ll be using this text editor to avoid complexity.

But you can use any text editor of your choice. Just replace mousepad in the respective line below with your text editor of choice.

mousepad /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.UDisks2.policy

This will open org.freedesktop.UDisks2.policy file from /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.UDisks2.policy location.

2. Search for the line <action id=”org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount-system”> in this file.

5. Now save the file.

This should do the job. Thunar will not ask for password while mounting a hard disk partition from now on.
